For our homebirth, Carrie and I decided to post some affirmations around our home. I confess that I am not such a huge believer in this stuff, but the birth was something neither of us have ever done before, so it did make some sense to go into it with a can-do attitude, and having visible short phrases that helped cultivate the right mindset could help some. Most of these we did right after our July 25th due date came and went… so, with all kinds of anticipation hovering over us, it was good to sit down and do some artwork to get our minds off the birth but also to get more ready for the birth.
These affirmations are all watercolor on paper. We didn’t write them (that is, we’re not the authors) – we got them from a list that our midwife gave us. I didn’t scan them – I just took photo of them hanging in our house.
The one above “I feel the love…” I think turned out best.
This one (above) I really like – the lettering style is based on lettering by Ben Shahn, an artist who did a lot of great graphic work - whom I’ve borrowed from before.
This one above turned out well – it’s from a list of affirmations for partners/husbands.
I am a fan of short and sweet – the two above.
The two above are ones that I lettered, and Carrie painted. Below are some that she did on her own.
And this below is the one that I was kind of scared of – again from the list of partner affirmations – so Carrie lettered it for me.
Sketches of baby Maeve, and her birth announcement to be posted soon!
