Man – 8 July 2011

Man, 8 July 2011, India ink and watercolor on paper, 10"x4"

I am pretty proud of this one. It’s in an expressionist style that I’ve been playing with some lately, for example and explanation, see this earlier cityscape.

The little jagged parallel hatch lines are reminiscent of expressionist woodcuts – for example: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff’s 1917 woodcut Madchen mit Zopfen / Young woman with pigtails (right).

I am happy when I get something to look quite jumbled and distorted, but still read clearly… which is aided by the inclusion of eyes and hands. I can really distort things and, as long as there are hands and eyes more-or-less in the right place, it will read as a person… I think because our brains are grooved to recognize these features.

This piece is also in my intermittent men wearing ties series – for some earlier examples, see here1, here2, and here3.
