Flatiron Building – 22 October 2012

Flatiron Building, ink and watercolor on paper, 22 October 2012, 8″x8″

I’ve been doing a fair amount of plein air drawings (sometimes with watercolor) of streetscapes in New York City. This one is a very iconic building – the Flatiron – a cool old triangular skyscraper in the middle of Manhattan.

My composition in his image is a bit odd… it’s a very vertical subject that I did on a square canvas… not ideal… but looks ok. I like the negative space that the sky fills – and, at the bottom, a sense of the crowds of people out on the street in NYC.

More recent NYC streetscapes here and here and here.
