I did a series of watercolor foot and hand prints for our neighbors. Their daughter is just a couple of months older than ours, so it’s been great to have them around to talk about pregnancy, parenting, etc. These are similar to ones that Carrie and I did with our daughter last year. Mazie is 9 months old, so it was a tiny bit difficult to get good prints off of her (hands, especially)… though perhaps I just haven’t perfected my technique. I basically just paint the palm – using a watercolor brush – then stamp it on a page.
The one above is the real finished product. I think it turned out well. It’s all hand-lettered, using a watercolor brush. I don’t do any pencil – but I do kind of lay out what will go where (in my mind) then plunge in. Watercolor doesn’t lend itself to consistency, so varying the color all over make it look visually consistent (or, perhaps, consistently inconsistent.)
I did some practice versions using the not-so-great hand and foot prints.
Sometimes the less polished ones turn out even better, because they’re a little free-er and more open to experimentation.
